Taher Ali Quassim

Taher was born in Yemen, and studied in Yemen, Sweden and England. He has worked in Primary Health Care, public health and community involvement locally, regionally and internationally for over 25 years. Part of this work was in different countries in the Middle East and Africa. He came to Liverpool in 1995 and is now a full time Public Health Development Manager, employed by the Central Liverpool Primary Care Trust.

Taher was one of the founders and now the chairperson of the Liverpool Yemeni Arabic Club (LYAC), which was established in 1997. He is also the chairperson of the Liverpool Black and other Racial Minorities (BRM) Network and the chair of the BRM Education Sub-Group. He was one of the founders of Nadey Albluecoat, a partnership organisation between LYAC, Bluecoat Arts Centre and Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. Nadey Albluecoat delivers the annual Liverpool Arabic Arts Festival (LAAF), which is the only Arabic arts event of this size in the UK at present. Taher is a board member of the Bluecoat Arts Centre.

Taher was recently awarded the title of MBE in recognition of his dedication, commitments, professionalism and leadership. Apart from chairing the BRM Network's Steering group and its Education sub group, Taher's work includes supporting the Yemeni Community Association, establishing the Liverpool Arabic Centre and helping organise the Liverpool Arabic Arts Festival. This is in addition to his full time role within Liverpool PCT.

As a chair of BRM Education Sub group he has worked tirelessly to set a BRM parents forum and worked with other universities to assist in the recruitment of more BRM teachers. He also worked closely with Liverpool City Council Children Services Committee to produce a report, with recommendations, on BRM pupil's attainments.  He continues to work with Liverpool Education Authority to ensure that all the recommendations from that report are implemented.
