Liverpool's only BME Councillor

Anna Rothery

Anna has worked in community development for over 20 years, mainly working in one of the most cultural diverse cities in the UK, Liverpool.

In 1993 Anna played an integral part in setting up the Granby Toxteth Partnership, a partnership formulated across the Private, Public & Voluntary sectors to deal with the emerging Objective 1 funding. This was one of the first cross-sector partnerships nationally.

She also secured funding to set up a formal staffing structure to deliver the objectives of Granby Toxteth Partnership via Liverpool City Challenge.

Anna went on to work for a number of major government initiatives including: Granby Toxteth SRB (Single Regeneration Budget) as a Community Project Development Manager; HAZ (Health Action Zones); Health Related Business Start Ups; SBS (Small Business Service); Innovations Factory as a Business Manager delivering training to trainee social entrepreneurs from inner city areas, developing/ generating small business ideas and social enterprises and DWP (Department for Work & Pensions) as Contract Manager for South Central Liverpool Action Teams for Jobs.

Anna currently works as the regional coordinator for Migrant Workers North West.

Anna was chosen out of 400 applicants to participate in Operation Black Vote’s MP shadowing Scheme (OBV 2005) which culminated in her standing as a candidate and being elected as councillor for Princes Park Ward, where she is the current serving councillor. Anna is also the only BME councillor out of approx 90 councillors in Liverpool city and 146 nationally. She sits on the Education & Skills Select Committee and is also a member of Liverpool City Council planning Committee.

She is committed to true political representation for all of our diverse communities and is an alumni graduate of OBV who continues to support the programme via talks, training sessions etc.

Anna is also a member of the Women in Public Life Task Force set up by Harriet Harmon in 2007 to ensure that BME women participate in public life. She regularly feeds into policy formation to bring about a more inclusive structure that encourages BME women from all walks of life to participate in public/political life.

She is also the chair of Liverpool Black Leadership Forum a newly formed forum bringing together various leaders across the city to deal with issues pertaining to the city’s black population, including education, employment and business.
